As the Southwood Elementary School First Grade Team, we believe our goal is to provide a positive and safe environment in order to:

  • promote self-confidence and a love of learning.

  • nurture relationships that support each other.

  • facilitate independent and critical thinking.

  • motivate and inspire children.

In grade one, your child will build important reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Students will continue to learn the letters and sounds that make up words. They will think, talk, and write about what they read in stories, articles, and other sources of information. In their writing, students will work on putting together clear sentences on a range of topics using a growing vocabulary.

Our math program promotes visual thinking and discussion, and integrates ongoing reinforcement. Our daily math lessons incorporate thinking strategies that will help your child develop the skill. This type of learning will help your child develop a concrete understanding of the skill, rather than rote learning.

Our first graders spend time as a scientist, exploring, experimenting and observing. In first grade, students are taught to observe, ask questions and record their observations and answers. Our students begin to more deeply explore their communities and the world around them, enhancing their research skills, their general knowledge of the world around them and the ability to compare and contrast different groups.

First grade is an exciting year!  We encourage you to contact us at any time.

Sincerely,

Your 1st Grade Team:
